Meet the Orchestra - Learn About the Instruments (for kids)!

Monday, October 19, 2020 by Steph Fairbanks | Music Education

Have you ever wondered what a bassoon sounds like? Or looks like?

Wait - what's a bassoon, you ask??

There are many of these kinds of videos floating around the internets. I've watched a lot of them, because I'm a music nerd and this is right up my alley. This was sent to me by one of my Red Balloons parents, and it is by far the best of its kind that I've seen. Entertaining and educational - watch it with your kids and you, too, will be able to tell a bassoon apart from an English Horn, a viola from a cello, and a timpani from a triangle. Just be careful - showing this to your kids might mean you end up with a tuba in your living room someday (seriously - she's amazing).

Piano: The Gateway Instrument

Sunday, August 2, 2020 by Steph Fairbanks | Piano

I often refer to the piano as the “gateway instrument” as even just a few years of learning to play will make other instruments much easier to pick up. Want to learn how to play the violin next? You’ve already developed finger strength, learned to use your hands and fingers independently, and can read the treble clef! Trombone? Having learned the fixed intonation on the piano will help when finding notes on instruments without, you’ll already know how to read the bass clef, and you’ll understand how your part fits in with the other instruments in the group! Knowing how to play the piano is truly the best preparation for any other instrument!

But that’s not all – playing the piano is also excellent for…the brain?? This infographic outlines the different and maybe surprising ways playing can benefit a child’s mind. In my Let’s Play Music classes, children learn through singing, games, puppet shows, and play, using their bodies and minds as they work towards musical understanding and piano proficiency. Enrollment for the fall semester is open now with online classes beginning August 27 th !
